and to show that the ill-discipline of Tynedale RFC’s supporters persisted a century later we report on a discussion with a Referee’s Assessor on the touchline at a Tynedale v Carlisle match on Boxing Day 1989:-
Upon remarking that the particular referee that day had not been seen at Tynedale before, the Assessor replied –
“No, it’s his first 1st XV game here.”
“We start them at the coast you know.”
“After a while they get games at Novos – then Northern and Gosforth.”
“Then, only when they are blooded, do we send them inland to Tynedale.”
“It’s not the players, it’s the spectators you know!”
