BOURNVILLE HISTORY
The rugby section of the Bournville Athletic Club was established on 17th August 1909, when 22 members showed a strong interest in taking up the game. So it was that workers from Cadburys in Bournville village founded BOURNVILLE RFC, donning the chocolate colours.
The original Bournville RFC sides consisted entirely of Cadbury employees and the company would traditionally award caps to players. Gradually through the years other players from outside the Cadbury family joined the club.
Operating at the Rowheath playing fields for 100 years, the club temporarily shared facilities with the University of Birmingham before moving to their current ground at the Avery Fields Sports and Events Centre, a £3m facility 4 miles from Bournville itself.
Founding members of Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and affiliated to the North Midlands Rugby Football Union, Bournville have gone from strength to strength after struggling at first, gaining promotion from Level 10 to its present day Level 4 in the RFU league structure.
Bournville’s promotion into our league as champions in 2020 from the Midland Premier was very comfortable indeed, and at the end of that abbreviated 2019-20 season they were 22 point ahead of 2nd placed Sheffield having won 20 of their 21 matches. In that season’s Midland Premier League were a number of clubs well-known to Tynedale supporters -Broadstreet, Nuneaton, Peterborough Lions, Sheffield RUFC and South Leicester.

THIS SEASON
In the first ever match between the two clubs at Tynedale Park on the 11th December 2021 Tynedale won 48-12, playing some impressive rugby on a dark, wet, day scoring seven tries to Bournville’s two.
The Tynedale squad was:-
BACKS Cooke, West, Clark, Grant, Todhunter, Blackett, Ball
FORWARDS White, Lowdon, Carmichael, Wearmouth, Dunn, Cousin, Robson, Blackburn
REPLACEMENTS Scott, Johnston, Hanning, Stanwix, Ward
This season Bournville started the season quite well but subsequently their results, like the majority of teams in the league, have been a mixed bag.
The current league standings of the two clubs are:-
P | W | D | L | F | A | PD | Pts | Pos | |
Tynedale | 27 | 12 | 1 | 14 | 648 | 783 | -135 | 67 | 7 |
Bournville | 26 | 6 | 1 | 19 | 610 | 903 | -293 | 40 | 13 |
Bournville have played one game fewer than Tynedale, so the points scored by each team are very similar, with an average of 24 points per match. However, Bournville have conceded 903 points in their 26 matches, about 35 points per match, compared to Tynedale’s 29 points per match (which isn’t brilliant either). That poorer defence perhaps explains why Bournville lie six places below Tyne in the current table. - We just love stats dont we!!
