This Saturday our 1stXV make their first journey of the season down the M6 as they head off into Lancashire to take on Fylde.

Whenever Tynedale travel to play Fylde there will be many people from both clubs who recall the horrible day of Saturday 25th 2004 when Tynedale’s young prop Alistair Johnson suffered a serious injury.
It is appropriate that we pause to remember Ali.

TYNEDALE/FYLDE MATCHES
Tynedale’s first visit to Fylde’s Woodlands Memorial Ground was a friendly, played on the 10th February 1990.
Tynedale’s team that day included current Tynedale Vice-Presidents Gary Taylor and Graham Yates.
Also playing that day were Steven Dunn, Richard(Dick) Parker (the Captain that season), and Martin White, all of whom have sons, Graeme, Robert and Angus who are prominent members of the Tynedale 1stXV squad this season.

TYNEDALE v FYLDE LEAGUE MATCHES
The clubs next met at Fylde on the 13th September 2003 in National 3 North following Fylde’s relegation from National 2 at the end of the previous season. This was the first ever league match between the sides, Tynedale narrowly winning 17-16.
Tynedale’s squad that day was:-
Forwards: Williams, Charlton, Southern, Johnson, Turnbull, A Murray, J Murray, Rastall
Backs: Holmes, Belgian, Duncan, Mooney, Hills, Boston, White
Replacements: J Smales, R Parker, E Parker, Brown

Noticeable names among this squad include current Colts Manager and Coach, Steve Turnbull and Andrew Murray while anchoring the scrum at tight head was our present day Director of Senior Rugby, Peter (Bullet) Southern, who actually went on to be an ever-present that season.
Also worthy of mention is that the referee on the day was Brendan Fitzmaurice who is still doing his stuff as an Assistant Referee in our league, and regularly officiates at Tynedale matches.

A short report from our old website:-
“A great start to the season with Tyne falling behind in the first half but coming good in the second before having to withstand a nail biting finish.
Trailing 0-9 at the interval a Ben Duncan try from 40 metres after 47 minutes put Tynedale on the board for the first time, Andrew Murray converting, A Phil Belgian penalty from halfway then gave us a slender advantage which was extended when with 5 minutes to go skipper Keith Johnson scored under the posts, Belgian converting.
Fylde came back however in the dying minutes and scored a try wide out which was converted. Tyne thereafter had to withstand a nervous last few minutes.”

There were nine further league matches between the sides in the five years up to 19th April 2008 after which Tynedale were promoted to National One. There then was a 3 year gap until October 2011 when the teams met in the league again following Fylde’s promotion from National 2 North, although the teams did meet in a pre-season friendly at the Woodlands in August 2008.

When fixtures were renewed in 2011 the first match at Fylde was a very fine match which the home side won 39-28. Of the Tynedale squad that day two remain eleven years later, Graeme Dunn and Jonathan Cousin. Also in the Tynedale squad that day were two young players who are currently starring at the highest level - Chris Harris (Gloucester, Scotland, British Lions) was full back and George McGuigan (Newcastle Falcons, current England squad) came off the bench for the last 5 minutes.

There were then seven fixtures until 2015, when Tynedale were relegated from National One. Fylde followed in 2018, and the contests began again, this time back in level 4.

2018-2019 Tynedale 59 Fylde 15
2018-2019 Fylde 31 Tynedale 5
2019-2020 Tynedale 27 Fylde 34
2019-2020 Fylde 50 Tynedale 10
2021-2022 Tynedale 24 Fylde 48
2021-2022 Fylde 38 Tynedale 26

A total of 24 league matches played – Fylde won 12, Tynedale won 11 and one drawn.
Recent results have been very much in Fylde’s favour however.

Fylde have made a wonderful start to this season, with bonus-point victories in all of their 7 matches and they sit proudly on top of the pile. Their victories include excellent results at Hull Ionians and Rotherham and we know we are in for a tough one but we also know that if we are on top of our game we are more than a match for most.

Fylde results to date:-

Fylde 34 Chester 29
Preston Grasshoppers 6 Fylde 22
Fylde 74 Harrogate 5
Hull Ionians 31 Fylde 34
Fylde 42 Blaydon 7
Rotherham 16 Fylde 41
