The 1stXV return to action after their Easter break when they make the first of three successive trips south into Yorkshire with a journey into East Yorkshire to take on Hull Ionians.

TYNEDALE V HULL IONIANS
Tynedale played the Hull club, firstly, as the old Hull and East Riding team, for 25 years or so, then as Hull Ionians for a further 10 years.
A report from an old Hexham Courant records Tynedale's first ever trip to Hull being on 2nd April 1966 with Hull & ER ending 6-0 victors:-

The report mentions Tynedale player Malcolm Young who went on to win 10 caps for England (should have been a lot more) and Mike Tickell who attended our last home match two weeks ago against Huddersfield, as did Alan Stokoe, Douglas Hamilton, Gordon Richardson and Ian Blyth who more than likely played in this same match at Hull.

When League rugby was introduced in 1987 Ionians and Tynedale were founder members of North 1 – level 5 rugby. They competed there for thirteen years, until Tyne were promoted in 2000. Hull finished second to Tynedale in that 1999/2000 season, and were promoted two years later in 2002.

Until 2018 Tynedale dominated the League fixtures, winning 12 of the 14 matches played, and scoring 403 points for, with 217 points against. However, things changed dramatically in season 2018/2019 :-
2018/2019 Tynedale 20 Hull Ionians 50
2018/2019 Hull Ionians 38 Tynedale 29
2021/2022 Hull Ionians 50 Tynedale 14
2021/2022 Tynedale 18 Hull Ionians 18
2022/2023 Tynedale 21 Hull Ionians 36
Tynedale have certainly ceased to be a bogey team for Ionians!

Tynedale’s league record against Hull Ionians 1987 now look like this:-
Played 19
Won 12
Drawn 1
Lost 6
For 555
Against 409

THE IONIANS NAME
The historians in Hull may have considered them to have been all-conquering, but the Ionians were only one of the four major tribes of the Hellenic world alongside the Dorians, Aeolians and Achaeans.
The Ionians were actually renowned for their love of philosophy, art, democracy and pleasure, rather than aggression, so the choice may have been a strange one. Still, Hull Ionians has a nice ring to it: Hull Dorians may have sounded OK and been spelt quite easily, but not the other two!

The last Tynedale visit to Hull Ionians was early last season on 11th September 2021 when Tyne’s first away match for 18 months resulted in a heavy 50-14 defeat with Ionians securing a four-try bonus point after only 16 minutes.
The Tynedale squad that day was:-
Forwards:- Batey, Moloney, Carmichael, Wearmouth, Dunn, McCullough, Wainwright, Bell
Backs:- J Outson, M Outson, Pike, Burden, Clark, Hutton, West
Replacements:- Caudle, Fletcher, Robson, Stanwix, Todhunter

Earlier this season on February 4th the re-arranged fixture at Tynedale Park between the sides resulted in an 36-21 victory for the Ionians side who were very impressive on the day.
Hull Ionians currently sit in third position in the league – a position they seem to have occupied for much of the season! They will be looking to finish the season with two good victories to help fight off a late challenge for third spot from Otley.
Ionians’ last match, before Easter, at Harrogate had an unusual scoreline, Ionians winning 72-40 (12 tries to 6)!!!
