LYMM RFC V TYNEDALE RFC
Saturday 8th February 2025 (KO 2.30pm)
After successive home matches our 1stXV are back on the road again this weekend as we head down the M6 into Cheshire to play Lymm RFC at their Crouchley Lane ground.
AWAY TRIPS TO CHESHIRE
This is Tynedale’s second visit of the season to Cheshire, their previous visit on the 19th October 2024 was to Chester RFC and resulted in a 48-19 loss, so we hope this away match has a happier ending.
Apart from Lymm and Chester Tynedale have played against a number of other Cheshire clubs over the years.
Cheshire has 52 rugby union clubs compared with Northumberland (including North Tyneside & Newcastle)’s 22, so it is well represented at all levels of rugby in England.
A list of Tynedale’s last 1st XV fixtures in Cheshire against some of those clubs would include :-
Wilmslow RFC 16.12.1972 (Lost 4-38)
Birkenhead Park 11.03.1989 (Won 3-6)
Winnington Park 18.03.2000 (Won 9-39)
New Brighton 11.02.2006 (Won 16-48)
Sale FC 17.09.2016 (Lost 45-13)
Caldy 15.10.2016 (Lost 56-13) 04.04.20 match cancelled – Covid.
Macclesfield 17.11.2018 (Won 15-38)
Only two lost matches. Does that augur well for Saturday? Not if you look at the positions of the two teams in the current League!
WHERE ARE THOSE OTHER CLUBS NOW?
Apart from Lymm and Chester who are in Tynedale’s League, (level 4), which of the other Cheshire clubs have flourished or struggled?
Caldy certainly have done well, and are now in the Championship at level 2. Sale FC are in National One, level 3;
Birkenhead Park are at level 5, just below Tyne.
Three clubs have struggled; Winnington Park at level 6 and both New Brighton and Wilmslow now languish at level 7 in the Leagues.
PAST MATCHES - TYNEDALE v LYMM
Tynedale have now played five times against the Lymm 1st XV, but this is only the second time that Tynedale have visited the Cheshire club.
The two clubs first met on the 28th September 1985, in a John Player Cup match at Tynedale Park. Tynedale won that match 22-0.
Since then the four league matches between the clubs have finished as follows:-
10th October 1992 Tynedale 38 Lymm 15 League North I
23rd Sept. 2023 Lymm 33 Tynedale 26 Nat. League Two (North)
20th Jan 2024 Tynedale 36 Lymm 18 Nat. League Two (North)
10th October 2024 Tynedale 32 Lymm 37 Nat. League Two (North)
Home advantage seemed to make the difference, until the match earlier this season.
Two wins for Lymm (103 points) and two to Tynedale (132 points).
LYMM THIS SEASON
Lymm have had an excellent season and are one of three clubs who are competing shoulder to shoulder for the single promotion spot.
The only blemish on their season has been an away defeat to rivals Sheffield with a 100% home record – bonus point victories in all of their 8 home matches.
Lymm currently sit in 3rd position but have played a game less than Leeds and Sheffield with 5 points separating them from leaders Leeds Tykes. The final top positions could well be settled by points for and against.
.Its certain to be yet another tough, competitive match.
