Rotherham's more recent history has certainly been an interesting one. After leagues were formed in 1987-1988 Rotherham shot through the leagues with multiple promotions. Rotherham did, however, dwell two seasons in Tynedale’s league (North One) before being promoted into the league above as champions with a 100% record at the end of 1991-1992. In those days teams played each other only once in a season and Tynedale finished as runners up to Rotherham after narrowly losing their match at Rotherham and winning their other nine matches.
Having secured promotion from North One Rotherham continued on their merry way and after a total of seven promotions reached the summit in 2000—2001 when they played in the premiership albeit for only one season, although they did return in 2003-2004 for another single season in the top level.
Rotherham dropped into National Two (North) at the end of the 2019-2020 season. There were expectations that the Titans would find their way back into National One in 2021-2022 at the first time of asking but some close defeats in the latter part of the season cost them dearly and they had to settle for third place behind Hull and Sedgley Park.
Rotherham were victors in both of their matches against Tynedale last season – winning at Rotherham 38-14 on 29th November 2021 and winning 47-31 at Corbridge in the return match on 26 March 2022. The Tynedale squad that day was :-
Forwards: White, Batey, Carmichael, Wearmouth, Dunn, Cousin, Wainwright, Blackburn
Backs: Outson, Rodgers, Pike, Miller, Cooke, Hutton, Parker
Replacements: Loughhead, Telfer, Bell, Stanwix, Leslie
By their own standards Rotherham have had a mixed start to this season, comfortably winning both their home matches but losing out at Hull Ionians in their one away match.
