Sheffield Tigers began 2023 with a bang as they romped to a bonus-point triumph against Tynedale.
The opening 40 minutes was attritional to say the least with very little between the two sides as the contest was played in some challenging conditions.
Centre James Broadley opened the scoring after smashing through two defenders to cross the whitewash, star man Mark Ireland missing the conversion but his side nevertheless deservedly went into the break 5-0 up.
The hosts started the second half the stronger and extended their lead when scrum half Ryan Holmes sniped over from short range after 52 minutes, this time Ireland converted to extend the lead to 12 points.
Two more tries in four minutes saw the hosts secure the try scoring bonus point and effectively end the visitors' challenge. First over was centre Barney Goatley on the hour mark before star-man Ireland finished off a wonderful move to fire over four minutes later. Ireland converted both to take his personal tally to 11 points and secure the win.
Tynedale scored a late consolation try when number 8 Ben Bell forced his way over the whitewash with fly-half Jake Rodgers converting but overall it was a tough day for the visitors.
