ONE MINUTE SILENCE BEFORE MATCH

We will hold a one minute silence ahead of the game as a mark of respect to two people who we tragically lost in the past week.

Mat Coultas, a National League Official in National Two East, passed away whilst jogging last week. All match officials across the National Leagues will be wearing black armbands this weekend to mark this tragic loss.

In addition we will also be remembering Joanne Neal, Andrew's wife, who tragically died suddenly last weekend. Joanne was the mum of youth players Archie (15) and Harrison (13) - the whole family being very active members of Tynedale Rugby Club.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all the families and friends of Mat and Joanne in what will be a very difficult and sad time.

BILLINGHAM’S PROMOTION
Billingham came into National League Two North this season as impressive champions of last season’s Regional One North East, finishing 12 points ahead of their nearest rivals Heath.
Billingham’s results included a 100% home record.

BILLINGHAM RUFC’s HISTORY

Billingham RUFC was formed in 1924 as the rugby section of the Synthonia Sports Club of the Synthetic Ammonia and Nitrates Company which later became the Imperial Chemical Industries.

Playing their games at the company’s Central Road sports ground, the new club became very strong in the 1950s and 1960s.
The decline in the fortunes of ICI in the 1970s was reflected in the difficulties of the rugby club which led a nomadic existence before moving to their present Greenwood Avenue ground in 1996. A new clubhouse was built in 2000.

In 1997-98 Billingham became champions of Durham and Northumberland Division Two and in 2007-08 were champions of Division One of that league.
They became champions of North East Division One East in 2009-10, were relegated the following season before bouncing back at the first attempt to become champions again in 2011-12.
Billingham were constant members of National Three North and the new Northern Premier Division until their promotion from Regional One North-East as champions in 2023.

ADAM RADWAN
The England International winger played for the Billingham club before joining Newcastle Falcons in 2016.

Billingham’s decline in the 1970’s meant fixtures between the two clubs ceased, so it is gratifying to see the rivalry renewed now.

THIS SEASON MATCH
9th September 2023 - Billingham 20 Tynedale 17

For Billingham Dan Burns appeared first on to the AGP, making his 250th appearance for the club, closely followed by Luke Wilson for his 200th outing.

It was also the first appearance of Billingham’s new home strip which is White with thin green hoops, a little bit like a mint viennetta but resplendent in the glorious sunshine. Tynedale jogged out in their traditional Blue and white hoops joined by the officials in a garish orange.

The heat was on for these sides after losing in round one the previous week, with Sam Heron’s boot making the difference in this match.

Billingham drew first blood, as Peter Youll crashed over for the opening score. After 19 minutes a Tynedale scrum allowed Cam Grant to step through the Billingham defence to score. Jake Rodgers kicked the conversion. Billingham then pushed into the Tynedale 22. A penalty was called, and a tap and go from Heron saw him crash over the line and add the conversion.

In the second half a chip over the top from Peter Evans saw Joe Ross regather. Holding off three defenders, he off-loaded to Evans who found substitute Louis Groark who sprinted in from 55 metres to score.

The Tynedale scrum Half, Ben Douglas, then made a great outside break, rounding the defending full-back to score after 55 minutes. The conversion was missed and it was 17-17.

With five minutes remaining Tynedale were penalised for not rolling away and Heron kicked the penalty. Tynedale had a chance to level in the last minute, but Jake Rodgers was unable to score with a penalty from 30 metres.

THIS SEASON
Billingham have had a decent first half of the season and their league position, in what is a very close, competitive league is probably effected by the fact that they have played one or two less matches than the teams above them.
