Tynedale’s relentless forward power wasn’t enough to secure victory as they fell 32-37 to Lymm in a thrilling encounter. Despite scoring six tries, including a remarkable five-try performance by Ralph Johnston, Tynedale couldn’t hold off Lymm’s adventurous back play, with the visitors snatching a dramatic win in the dying moments.
The game kicked off with Lymm striking early, taking a 5-0 lead within four minutes. But Tynedale responded emphatically, with a catch and drive lineout with Johnston scoring his first try at the 11-minute mark, followed by two more identical plays in quick succession to push the home side ahead 17-5 by the 25th minute. Josh Leslie’s only conversion added further pressure on Lymm, but they kept in the game, leaving the halftime score tied at 22-22.
With the breeze behind them, Tynedale entered the second half as favourites. However, Lymm found their rhythm, denying Tynedale possession and taking advantage of Tynedale’s difficulties with the high tackle law and multi-phase play. A crucial turning point came late in the game when Lymm managed to steal two Tynedale lineout throws, one deep in their own territory, which allowed them to march up the field and grind out their victory.
Though Johnston’s fifth try of the afternoon gave Tynedale a 32-29 lead at the 63rd minute, Lymm’s resilience paid off. Their match-winning try in the 79th minute sealed the 37-32 result.
Lymm’s adventurous style and well-executed possession play won the day, while Tynedale were left to rue missed opportunities and a couple of key turnovers in the set piece. It was a tough loss for a Tynedale side that showed immense forward strength, particularly in the scrum and driving maul, but ultimately couldn’t translate that dominance into a victory.
