TRAVELLING TO FYLDE
The trip to Fylde means a 138 mile journey for the Tynedale team this weekend,
Two weeks ago the President of Chester RUFC, at the pre-match lunch at Corbridge, pointed out that, because the previous season Chester had had to travel to Redruth in National League Two (South), a distance of 340 miles, coming up to Tynedale, when his club was moved back to National 2 (North) from National 2 (West) made the 180 miles journey a relative doddle.
Fortunately for Chester, Macclesfield RUFC replaced them in that League this season.
At a mere 180 miles Tynedale‘s longest away match is the one Chester made a fortnight ago. Quite an easy trip, and Fylde is even closer..
It wasn’t always so. What about Tynedale/Mounts Bay (Penzance), 493 miles in 2009, or Tynedale/Redruth, 476 miles in 2010?
TYNEDALE AWAY JOURNEYS
Over the decades Tynedale RFC’s longest 1st XV journeys, excluding tours, has increased from 30 to 508 miles :-
1881. Sunderland - 36 miles
1891. Carlisle - 39 miles
1901. Percy Park - 30 miles
1911. Hartlepool Rovers - 53 miles
1921. Carlisle - 39 miles
1931. Cockermouth - 64 miles
1951. Keswick - 58 miles
1961. Galashiels - 66 miles
1971. Bingley - 123 miles
1981. Hull & ER - 158 miles
1991. Winnington Park - 168 miles
2001. Bedford Athletic - 248 miles
2011. Jersey - 508 miles
2021. Luctonians - 270 miles.
The modes of transport changed too, to cope with these distances, from horseback to local trains and buses, motor cars, coaches, inter-city trains and plane flights. Now, back to buses, and it’s all for competitive away matches!
