HARROGATE RUFC V TYNEDALE RFC
Saturday 18th March 2025 (KO 3pm)
It’s a short trip down into North Yorkshire this Saturday when we travel down to play our old friends from Harrogate.
TYNEDALE V HARROGATE
Tynedale first played Harrogate RUFC in January 1987. Tynedale won an untidy game 3-4. The match had been moved to a pitch at the Grammar School in Harrogate.
The next meeting was in a league match at Harrogate on the 12th. March 1988 which Harrogate won 24 – 7.
In all League matches Tynedale’s record against Harrogate has been Played 14, Won 9, Drawn 1, Lost 4, Points for 313, Points against 254.
That drawn match was the last one played by the two teams, on 16th November 2024 at Tynedale Park.
LIFE IN NORTH 1
When Tynedale played that first league match the newly formed Northern Division One League consisted of Winnington Park, West Park, Kendal, Otley, Hartlepool Rovers, Tynedale, Wigton, Hull & ER, Harrogate, Widnes and Middlesbrough.
Tynedale finished as runners-up to Kendal that season.
It took another 12 years, until 2000, for Tynedale to earn promotion from that League! Harrogate were promoted in 1990 to what was then Division 4 (North) – now National 2 (North).
Tynedale’s team in the first league match played at Harrogate in March 1988 was Adrian Tallantyre; John Rutherford, Derek Hunter, Ian Dodds, Mark Richard; Gary Taylor, Gary Rutherford; Richard Parker, Alan Gledson (Capt), Chris Dixon; Paul Walker, Angus Murray; Mickey Lee, Graham Yates and Fred Dickinson. Reps. Charles Ayton, Paul Deegan.
Seven farmers (six of them in the forwards)!
Gary Taylor And Graham Yates are now Vice-Presidents at Tynedale.

Tynedale 33 Harrogate 33 – 16th November 2024
Nearing the end Harrogate held a 33-21 lead having led for most of the game. Poor ball retention meant that Tynedale had struggled to get a foothold until the last 10 minutes, when replacement Ben Haigh went in under the posts for Cam Grant to convert, before Will Roberts blasted down the right wing to bring things level. For Harrogate Thomas Steene could have won it deep into injury time, but he put a 23-metre penalty wide.
The draw meant that Tynedale had not won any of the first five home matches played in the season. In fact they had no home success to crow about until 14th December when they beat Hull at Tynedale Park..
HARROGATE THIS SEASON
On their return to our league Harrogate have struggled near the bottom of the league but as we all know our league this season contains no ‘lame ducks’ and the bottom teams are more than capable of defeating the majority of other teams in the league.
Harrogate’s home results have been better than their away form and if anybody doubts Harrogate’s quality they just need to look at their last two home matches where they have defeated Fylde and Hull Ionians.
With every point vital in Harrogate’s bid to avoid relegation we are sure to have a very difficult, competitive match against a fired-up Harrogate side.
