Tynedale RFC v Hull Ionians RUFC
Saturday 22nd March 2025 (KO 3pm)
WELCOME
This Saturday we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Hull Ionians. We have a long history of excellent matches against Ionian teams, and we look forward to exciting contests today.
We also, of course, extend a warm welcome to this week’s match officials Davie Charlton, Simon Williams and Fraser Gill.
This Saturday we also host our annual Past Players Dinner and we bid a fond welcome to the many past-players who will no doubt be casting a critical eye over our current team and reliving how much better things were in their day!!
To EVERYBODY - Enjoy your day
SALLY WILSON
Sally Wilson the wife of the Hull Ionians popular President Pat and mother of players Sam and Josh sadly died on Friday 7th March 2025.
Sally was very much a mainstay of the Club for many years and, along with her team of volunteers, has raised thousands of Pounds for the Club by running the regular 1st XV match day raffle. Over the years Sally had been involved in organising numerous social events and was a friendly face known by many members and guests at Hull Ionians.
A minute’s silence was held in remembrance prior to the kick-off at the Ionians’ home match against Sheffield RUFC last weekend.
We send our condolences to Pat, Sam and Josh their sons, their family and all Sally’s friends at Hull Ionians.
OLD ADVERSARIES
Tynedale played the Hull club, firstly, as the old Hull and East Riding team for 26 years, then as Hull Ionians for a further 10 years.
LEAGUE RESULTS OF IONIANS v TYNEDALE
When League rugby was introduced in 1987 Ionians and Tynedale were founder members of North 1 – level 5 rugby. The teams competed there for thirteen years, until Tyne gained promotion in 2000. Hull finished second to Tynedale that 1999/2000 season, and were then promoted two years later in 2002.
Until 2018 Tynedale dominated the League fixtures, winning 12 of the 14 matches played, and scoring 403 points, with 217 points against. However, things then changed dramatically.
MATCHES BETWEEN IONIANS AND TYNEDALE AFTER 2018/19
08/09/2018 Tynedale 20 Hull Ionians 50
22/12/2018 Hull Ionians 38 Tynedale 29
11/09/2021 Hull Ionians 50 Tynedale 14
08/01/2022 Tynedale 18 Hull Ionians 18
04/02/2023 Tynedale 21 Hull Ionians 36
15/04/2023 Hull Ionians 59 Tynedale 7
18/11/2023 Tynedale 28 Hull Ionians 25
16/03/2024 Hull Ionians 26 Tynedale 36
23/11/2024 Hull Ionians 12 Tynedale 16
Hull Ionians won five of the next six matches, with one drawn.
However, as Tynedale won both matches last season as well as the recent match in November, league wins are now 14-7 in Tynedale’s favour.
MATCH EARLIER THIS SEASON
When the teams last met in November Ionians were in 7th position in the league, Tynedale were 12th. Now the positions have changed, with Tyne now lying 6th (64 points) and Ionians 8th (53 points).
Tynedale’s revival is very strange:-
• No win in the first 8 matches.
• Now, 6 away wins (but only 4 at home).
• 3 drawn matches (the only one of the 56 teams in the National Leagues to have such a high number.)
• 33 points scored three times.
3:33: The number 3 seems to persist!!
THE IONIANS NAME
When Ionians RUFC was founded in 1926 the historians in the group chose the name Ionians from the ancient all-conquering tribe based in the Greek Islands. The Ionians were only one of the four major tribes of the Hellenic world alongside the Dorians, Aeolians and Achaeans. Hull Dorians’ spelling would have been quite easy, but that wouldn’t have been true for the other two!
HULL IONIANS THIS SEASON
Hull Ionians currently sit in 8th position in the league, two places and 11 points below Tynedale. Their results have been a mixed bag, probably reflecting the competitive nature of the league this season where anyone can beat almost anyone.
One thing is for sure we are expecting to have another close, hard-fought encounter as we look to improve our disappointing home form this season.
