Strong Raiders squad too much for brave Shipwrights

The Raiders played their first fixture after the festive break on a heavy pitch following the thaw after snow and ice had covered the grounds for most of the week. However, the second string were able to field probably their strongest squad of the season with players returning from long term injury lay offs and unavailabilities and from the start the Wearside visitors were on the back foot with big carries from Micky Hall, Owen Loughead, Oliver Wall and captain Ed Craney giving Tynedale territorial advantage.
The home side took the lead through a Jake Rodgers try, followed up by a second score by Callum Morrell, the latter converted by Josh Leslie. Good work in the forwards by Dicky Dunn and Will Richards allowed scrum half and man of the match Matt Williams to move the ball to the right and Seb Jansen crossed for a try improved by Leslie's conversion.
The Sunderland side had a spell of decent possession and threatened to break through the Raiders defence but strong tackles by Jacob Brown and Alex Dryden prevented them scoring and turnover ball led to second row Will Nankeville breaking away before kicking ahead and James Ferguson won the footrace to the line to score the try, Leslie converted. With Tynedale now in control of the contest, Callum Morrell scored a try again converted to give the Raiders a 33- 0 half time advantage.
Changes were made at the break with brothers Charlie and Joe Richards coming into the forwards and Blair Hutchinson and Robert Parker coming on in the backline from an impressive replacement line up.
The lead was extended with a converted Alex Dryden try and a further try by Jake Rodgers again the two points were added.
The Shipwrights attacked again but once again Tynedale turned the ball over and Robert Parker broke away and his pace took him away from the tiring defenders for the next try.
The Raiders controlled the remainder of the game with Lewis Spark, coming on as the final replacement, and further tries came from James Ferguson, Callum Morrell to complete his hat trick and a brace from full back Jake Rodgers to bring his personal tally to four, Leslie adding three conversions.
Credit must go to the visitors who competed until the end of the game and indeed turned down the opportunity offered by the referee to end the game ten minutes from time and left the field at the end of the game with smiling faces.
