Strong Raiders performance

The Raiders overcame the Northern second team with a strong second half display in blustery conditions at McCracken Park, the strong wind blowing the length of the field forcing the Raiders to defend their line for long periods in the first half. The Raiders took an eight minute lead when Rob Parker and Dan Kerr broke through the home defence, Owen Loughead then slipped the ball to James Ferguson on the left wing who crossed the line to score the try to the left of the posts Josh Leslie converted.
The lead was extended when young prop Loughead scored the second try and Leslie again converted. Strong running from Rob Parker, led to the third try converted by Leslie and it appeared as though the Raiders were going to run away with the CANDY league contest, however the Wanderers then ran the ball at the visiting defence and scored a converted try to reduce the arrears. The Raiders were then forced to make two changes to the back line with injuries to Kerr and winger Tom Robson leaving the field to be replaced by Ryan Laverty and Rob Earnshaw.
When winger Ferguson scored the next try after good carries by Matt Williams and Thomas Beatty had left him in space to score his second try of the game, converted by Leslie it seemed as though the game was over as a contest, however Northern had different ideas and with great support play and good handling skills against weak defensive play from the Tynedale rear guard, scored two tries, one converted, to leave Tynedale leading 28- 17 at the turnaround.
With the wind at their backs and Liam Carmichael and captain Ed Craney beginning to dominate in the scrum with Charlie Richards and Dicky Dunn making strong carries it was Will Richards who scored the next try, converted by Leslie. Flanker Jacob Brown dived over the line for the next try, the hard working Brown benefitting from great support play, when it appeared that Ferguson would complete his hat trick, only to fall short of the line it was Brown who followed up to accrobattically collect the ball and somersault over the whitewash, Leslie converted.
With promising young props Oliver Wall and David O'Neiil coming off the bench for the final spell of the game, the man of the match Josh Leslie scored a trio of tries, all of which he converted himself, the fly half finding gaps in the weary home defence using all of his pace and vision to punish the Northern side and give Tynedale a flattering margin of victory after what had been a brave display from the Wanderers side depleted due to late cry offs and players being moved up to their first team squad.
