Tynedale came up against their North Northumberland rivals for the third time this season having lost twice to the league leaders in the previous encounters. Straight from the kick off the home side attacked the Alnwick side with determination on a glorious day with the pitch in great condition under the bright January sun.
With Dicky Dunn, Charlie Richards, Callum Morrell and Matt Williams testing the Alnwick defence with big carries into the opposition territory it was full back Alex Dryden who opened the scoring with a try converted by Josh Leslie on 18 minutes. With the breeze behind them Tynedale were able to play an attacking game and clever kicks from Leslie and man of the match Thomas Beatty meant that they maintained territorial advantage but were kept out by the strong Alnwick defensive line however, Ben Blackburn made one of his trademark powerful runs and broke through the Alnwick lines to run in the second try from 35 yards out, Leslie converted.
The visiting side came back at the Tynedale side but strong work in defence from Seb Jansen, Jacob Brown, Oliver Wall and Dan Lowdon kept the Alnwick side out, unfortunately Lowdon picked up an injury in the physical encounter and was replaced by Owen Shield. After snuffing out the danger of the Alnwick onslaught a Dryden kick allowed Tynedale to press the Alnwick line and Micky Hall scored the try, after forward pressure to allow Leslie to convert to give the hosts a 21- 0 advantage at half time.
Facing the wind in the second half Tynedale made one change with James Sample replacing Blackburn, scrum half Williams was using an ample supply of clean ball to great effect and James Ferguson, Dryden and Dunn all made good ground with strong runs before a spell of forward pressure allowed captain Ed Craney to score the first try of the half from close range Leslie converted.
Further changes were made from a strong replacements bench with David O' Neill and Tom Robson coming onto the field, the game was contested around the midfield area for a few minutes with Alnwick looking to close the deficit but determined defence from the home side denied them a score, but when Tynedale broke back into the Alnwick half, Alex Dryden scored the final try of the game, allowing Tynedale to avenge the previous defeats with a hard fought victory against a strong Alnwick side.
