Strong Centurions squad overcome Alnwick challenge

The attraction of a home game, a reduced injury list and no Covid cases/contacts saw the Centurions field a strong team based on the previous week's victorious side and a have bench of ten returnees. This happy state of affairs allowed the home side to avenge two heavy defeats inflicted by Alnwick earlier in the season.

After only five minutes, strong driving by lock forwards Ian Charlton and Steven Blair led to a scrummage on the half way spot. Neat work by half backs Chris Kerr and Andrew Murray released powerful centre Oliver Hillary on a long mazy run. Held just short, he fed the supporting Jake Sloan for a fine try that set the tone for an exciting display of adventurous rugby.

Rhys Loughead broke at the back of the scrum and drove powerfully to comit defenders and allow flankers Rob Earnshaw and Mark Smales to run wild, link with Murray who stabbed the ball forward. A great chase by Rory Dixon beat all defenders to the touch own.

Alnwick, to their credit, fought hard and were rewarded with an exciting try of their own to reduce the deficit as the game swung from end to end.

Prop forwards Rory Craney and Phil Scandle demonstrated neat foot-work and good hands to set up hooker Ollie Murrell who was held just short of the try line. The game was brought back for a penalty on the 22-metre line and quick-thinking Murray tapped and carried all opposition with him as he crashed over.

There was time for both wingers to be involved before the break as Jonathan Gormley ran well out of defence to go close and Adam Barnett to produce one of several fine tackles to save an almost certain Alnwick score. This left the game in the balance at half-time,
15-5.

The break was scarcely long enough for several motivational speeches and also to bring on all the replacements.

With six new forwards and four changes in the backs, a settling in period might have been expected but, the Centurions managed to produce three tries within 15 minutes of the restart.

Another quickly taken penalty by Murray saw him make ground and release Spencer Tolley who still had work to do to touch down wide out. Sloan then fielded a weak defensive kick to feed to unstoppable Hillary who rampaged over. Adam Binks, Callum Foxcroft and Lewis Sparke then combined to tackle, win the ball and make ground allowing the astute Murray to set up a second for Hillary.

Whilst these scores were decisive the visitors always posed a threat and they went over again from short range after a penalty for a high tackle led to a yellow card. However, with all the fresh legs from the bench the Centurions finished strongly and added two late tries.

Robbie Binks and Tom Kirkup showed great pace from their own 22 metre line to take play close to the line. From the resultant scrum James Crosby went very close before Joe Northwood cleverly changed direction and allowed Murray to cross for a second.

Close to the end the talented Jamie Dixon sold a beautiful dummy to allow his brother Rory to race home, ignoring the pleas for a pass from the supporting debutant, Sam Gill. Murray was able to land four conversions to make give the score line a deceptively one-sided look in what was a very competitive game.
