Inspired by the return of prop forward Phil Scandle with a rampaging man-of the match performance and, the steadying influence of Dan and Chris Kerr as influential half-backs, the Centurions were able to turn a heavy defeat by the same team in the previous week into a fairly decisive victory.
Powerful surges by Hugh Holland-Creaven and Scandle took play from their own half close to the visitor's line, allowing the Kerr brothers to link well with fly-half Dan strolling over.
Good work by the young flankers Will Jonas and Kael Horton set up an attacking field position for the home side and a neat midfield switch with Dan Kerr saw Martyn Hutton crash over. The forwards were now in command as Ed Weir, Robbie Binks and James Crosby went close before conceding a scrum. The pack recovered possession with a huge drive and the Kerrs combined well again as Dan scored his second try.
Just before the break a line out was caught and driven with Jason Armstrong reaching over the line for the try with the assistance of winger Spencer Tolley in close support. No conversions were made to these four tries to leave the score at 20-0.
In the second-half the forwards continued to dominate as the fresh legs of Rory Craney and Kieran Adams upped the tempo again. However, it was the Whitley Bay team who were rewarded for their efforts when fielding a weak defensive kick and touching down.
The Centurions, comfortable with their lead, then began to play a more expansive game. Donald Stembridge, Matty Lynch and another welcome returnee, Andy Harvey, were allowed to show their pace and power to go close. The side-stepping skills of Freddy Seruisavou actually too him over the line but he was held up.
Scandle then showed great awareness to spot a weakness in the visitors defence before touching down for a well-deserved try. The try of the match came late as Crosby, Seruisavou and Lynch handled beautifully to release Jake Sloan who dived over. Seruisavou, having taken over the kicking duties, landed both conversions to complete this well-earned victory.
