Professionalism
The season was marked by the advent of professionalism to the game, with its consequent challenges, and the impact of the new expanded league structure.

Jimmy Bell
Jimmy Bell retired as groundsman.

Clubhouse improvements
The renovated clubhouse was opened finally.

Rugby
In contrast to the previous season 95/96, this had been a very successful year, both in the playing and social spheres.

1stXV
The 1st XV won the Northumberland Senior Cup, beating Berwick 22 - 12 in the final. The final league position of fifth was an improvement on the previous year, and but for a couple of games which were lost 'at the death' against Widnes and Manchester, we could have been pressing for promotion.

The draw against Macclesfield in the final league match was especially satisfying, with John Robertson's 40-yard last minute drop goal meaning that Manchester rather than Macclesfield were promoted.

Tynedale 1st XV did not lose a home league game during the season, showing how difficult they were to beat at Tynedale Park.

League North 1
Manchester promoted, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and York relegated.

Junior sides
The Raiders had a poor season by their high standards, but the Grasshoppers earned the Journal 'team of the month' trophy in September.

County
Once again Tynedale provided the backbone of the Northumberland County side with Richard Parker, Steve Dunn, Steve Turnbull, Graham Yates, James Ponton, Simon Clayton-Hibbott and Craig Johnston (club captain) - 7 in all played in County championship matches and Paul Winter and Michael Old were in the squad.
